What is the meaning of repatriation? What is the meaning of repatriation?

EMS Ambulance 4 Feb 2021

What is the definition of repatriation?

What does repatriation mean? The word originates from Latin and literally means: return (Re) to the fatherland (Patria). So, the definition of medical repatriation is ‘returning to ones home country for medical reasons and with medical support’.

EMS Ambulance is a company that specialises in the latter type of repatriation. Are you, or someone you know, in a difficult medical situation abroad? Then EMS Ambulance can offer a solution. We offer various services with which we transport patients from any country on earth to any other country. We have three different transport options for this: Medical Escort, Air Ambulance and Road Ambulance.

How does medical repatriation work?

Now you know the definition of medical repatriation, but how does it work in practice? Above you can see a small infographic in which you can see some of our steps. The first step is that you call us explaining your situation or that of the patient, and where you want to move him/her to. We will then assist you if you have any questions about possible transport, and we can offer a medical consultation.

When we eventually proceed with medical transport, be it with one of the three above-mentioned options, we will provide a complete so-called ‘bed-to-bed’ service. This means that we will take care of the medical transport, from the starting location of the patient to fixing a bed in the hospital of the patient's ultimate destination.

Making sure everything is in place, all documents are filled out, and every avenue is pursued to complete the request of the patient is what we thrive on. This is why you can trust us to do this job. We have the medical expertise, we are active worldwide (most recently we opened an office in Dubai), we have important contacts with government agencies and medical service providers, and we have more than 10 years of experience.

Who is medical repatriation for?

People who consider medical repatriation do so for various reasons. Often, they prefer to be helped in their home country because they have more confidence in the hospitals there. It may be that a patient is in the last phase of his life and prefers to be with family and friends. Some people can best travel to a hospital in a particular country (not necessarily their home country) to be treated for a specific medical problem in which they specialise. In short, there are many different reasons for booking a medical transport. You may have a completely different reason that is not mentioned here, but EMS Ambulance will still help you.

Is medical repatriation also possible now that there is COVID?

COVID makes things a bit more complicated, but fortunately, we are aware of all the procedures, regulations and hygiene rules to deal with the new COVID reality. We also have the know-how, perseverance and experience that are necessary in these difficult times to get the patient to the right place and to get the job done.
